Heroes and Forsaken, in development

The studio

Witsteen is an independent game studio in Antwerp. We make fantasy games with a strong sense of place, rules you can read at a glance and nothing hidden behind them.

One studio, the whole game

Design, art direction, animation, effects, sound and code are made together and held to one standard. That is how a small studio keeps a game consistent from the first card to the last.

Developer and publisher

We build our games and bring them to players ourselves, on PC first and mobile after. Heroes and Forsaken is the first.

  • Game design

Rules, systems and progression that stay easy to read.

  • Art direction

Characters, cards and worlds held to one house style.

  • Animation and effects

Motion and spell effects tuned to read at the game’s camera.

  • Sound

Effects and voices cut to the action on screen.

  • Engineering

Unity, our own tools and automated checks.

  • Publishing

    Store pages, community and launch.

Antwerp

Stone, print and light.

Antwerp has spent centuries making things built to last: a cathedral of pale stone, the presses of the Renaissance, rooms made for daylight. It is a good place to make games meant to be played for years.

Stone

Building of the Cathedral of Our Lady began in 1352. Its north tower, finished in 1518, rises 123 metres.

Print

Plantin’s workshop printed books here from 1576 to 1867. Today it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Light

Inside the cathedral the light is plain daylight on pale stone.

Principles

How we work.

Four commitments that apply to every game we make, starting with this one.

  1. Faithful to the source

Every card, character and spell is checked against the books it comes from.

  2. Fair by design

Every card is earned by playing. The shop sells cosmetics only, so nothing that affects play is for sale.

  3. Readable at a glance

You should always see what happened, why it happened and what you can do next.

  4. Built in the open
